The starlings coat the overhead wires,

thick like hardening chocolate

quickly dipped and hung,

until a silent cue shoos the whole flock

flung swarming into a sky ballet

writhing across the twilight stage,

collapsing, expanding in slow twist and

tight tumble, spread stretched into folding over

and over, dense to thin shimmering waves,

until a silent cue woos the swarm down

again to waiting wires, crowding all the spaces,

just as it had been minutes ago, though then

every one was in different places.
